We celebrated the 100th anniversary of its establishment in 2022. Continuing to uphold the philosophy of “freedom and enlightenment” inherited from Hamamatsu Higher Technical School, based on “Monozukuri”, we aim for a better society by training students with both fundamental and practical skills; performing research that is impactful both locally and globally; and contributing to local communities and industries. We will work on education, research, social collaboration, industry-academia collaboration, and international collaboration to fulfill the philosophy and social demands. The western part of Shizuoka Prefecture, where the Faculty of Engineering is located, has traditionally been a prosperous region for manufacturing. Based on the spirit of “Yaramaika / Let’s try it” to actively take on new challenges, it produced founders of TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION, SUZUKI MOTOR CORPORATION, Honda Motor Co., Ltd, Nippon Gakki Co., Ltd. (currently Yamaha Corporation and Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.). In recent years, advanced technology related to optical and electronic technology has been accumulated, including the Japanese automobile industry. The Faculty of Engineering at Shizuoka University has played a part in this innovative history for a long time, and many of the graduates of the Faculty of Engineering and graduate school master's and doctoral courses play important roles as researchers and engineers in various fields. Currently, the Faculty of Engineering consists of five departments in basic and advanced engineering fields: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Electronics and Materials Science, Applied Chemistry and Biochemical Engineering, Mathematical and Systems Engineering. The five departments and a course of Management of Business Development in master course together provide a firm practical grounding that enables students to make an impact as technical specialists with an abundant educational background and sensibility, possessing an international outlook, capable of flexibly responding independently to a diversifying society, and of creating highly original scientific technology. The master's program, education and research are conducted in the "Graduate School of Integrated Science and Technology," which consists of four majors in science: engineering, informatics, agriculture, and science. We are developing global human resources who have perspectives and can take on global issues and complex challenges that straddle various fields, as well as innovative human resources who can create new industries. In today's world, which is said to be VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity), flexible thinking that transcends conventional frameworks and communication skills in a diverse society are required. Also, a resilience to turn failures into experience and take on new challenges is important. We, Faculty of Engineering, will develop human resources who can acquire advanced engineering expertise and problem-solving skills, take responsibility for innovation in various industrial fields, and play an active role on the global stage. We will promote regional and social collaboration and aim to be a reliable engineering school as a base of intelligence producing original research.
