Exhibition Influenced by two environmental factors - "class" and "region of origin" - painters from the Tohoku region who were active during the Edo period, developed various sensibilities and tastes. Some of these artists went to Edo and Kyoto for further training, while others went to Nagasaki, which was a window to foreign countries and culture. The expressions of their paintings, therefore, were not limited to those of the local areas, and many of them left behind works that were considered cutting-edge and unique for their time. This two-part exhibition highlights the works of painters who were born and raised in the six Tohoku prefectures and explores how their regional characteristics and enterprising spirit influenced their art. Part one runs until the end of August, and focuses on artists from Akita, Yamagata and Fukushima.
